How to calculate the yarn you need
You have found your next project but you would like to use a different yarn to make it ? On the following page dedicated to our yarn substitutes, you will be able to find a new yarn according to the needle size and preferred composition. Once you have found your yarn, here is the way you will calculate the number of balls you need :
Number of balls required in the pattern x (length of the ball of yarn TO BE REPLACED ÷ length of the NEW YARN) = number of balls to order

HERE IS AN EXAMPLE
The pattern M1728 from our magazine 41 is a fine sweater. It is knitted in stocking stitch on needles of 3 and 3.5 mm with 6 balls of yarn GOOMY 50.
GOOMY 50 can be replaced by IDÉAL and COTON FIFTY, as the gauges are identical. When you want to use a yarn substitute, the most important is to check that the number of stitches to knit the gauge is identical. In the present case, you need 24 stitches for a gauge of 10 cm with any of these 3 yarns.
| Needle size | number of stitches | number of rows | yarn | ball weight | yarn length per ball |
| 3.5 | 24 | 32 | GOOMY 50 | 50 grams | 215 meters |
| 3.5 | 24 | 31 | IDÉAL | 50 grams | 125 meters |
| 3.5 | 24 | 30 | COTON FIFTY | 50 grams | 140 meters |
MULTICOLOR VERSION
The yarn GOOMY 50 is knitted with needles of 3.5 mm.
You will need 6 balls of yarn for size S.
PLAIN VERSION
We suggest you the yarn IDÉAL to knit on needles of 3.5 mm. Here is how to calculate the required number of balls for size S :
6 x (215 ÷ 125) = 10,3 that is 10 BALLS
SUMMER VERSION
We suggest you the yarn COTON FIFTY to knit on needles of 3.5 mm. Here is how to calculate the required number of balls for size S :
6 x (215 ÷ 140) = 9,2 that is 9 BALLS
